Diagnostics 11 June 2005 -- Here's a good example of creative testing that I use to reduce unnecessary disassembly on a car.

I use the "Mass Air Flow Meter" to test the engine's health or ability to draw a breath during starter operation by tapping into a single wire. In the graph at right, the 4 pulses between the 2 long cursor lines show individual cylinders drawing air into the intake.

Kind of like an inverse compression test without even pulling a spark plug, or like cranking vacuum test without removing a vacuum hose. Cool, huh ?!
